The piercing serves as a particularly charming decorative flourish, while a molded baluster-form knop and collar provide an elegant transition from the broad fork head to the slender shaft.
Most intriguing is the original telescoping mechanism. Measuring just 11½ inches when closed, the narrow inner shaft slides smoothly from the tubular outer handle to extend the fork to a full 17½ inches—an ingenious six-inch increase that allowed its owner to reach comfortably toward the heat of an open hearth while keeping the hand safely removed from the fire.
The brass retains a particularly pleasing untouched, mellow golden-brown surface, with subtle darkening, oxidation and wear accumulated through generations of handling and exposure to the hearth. Small irregularities and finishing marks visible in the pierced head further contribute to its early, individually finished character.
Both highly functional and unexpectedly sculptural, this is a scarce and particularly handsome piece of early hearth equipment, distinguished by its telescoping construction, wonderfully graphic pierced head and beautifully aged brass surface—a humble domestic implement elevated by thoughtful design and craftsmanship.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0658/1957/4381/files/B630BEC1-CCBA-4924-BD6C-FFA3552C0067.jpg?v=1790603658
