American Hand-Hooked Geometric Rug on Plywood Backing Late 19th to Early 20th Century
1/7
$475.00 USD

A visually arresting American hand-hooked rug with exceptional graphic power, worked in narrow strips of wool in a bold concentric rectangular pattern that creates a striking recessed, almost tunnel-like optical effect. The composition is beautifully balanced, with alternating bands of muted rose, blue, green, cream, black, and soft neutrals set within a broad sage-toned outer border, giving the piece both strong folk character and a surprisingly modern abstract presence.

The rug was hand hooked from recycled wool cloth strips, with the subtle irregularities and honest variation in the loops that collectors look for in early examples. Its surface has a rich, soft texture and a wonderfully mellow palette, while the geometric arrangement gives it unusual visual energy far beyond the typical domestic hooked rug. Mounted on a plywood board years ago for wall display, it has long presented more as textile art than floor covering, and it works beautifully in that role.

A particularly strong example of American folk textile design, blending handmade warmth with remarkable graphic sophistication. Minor localized wear only, noted at one interior edge, not distracting from the overall presentation. An outstanding hooked rug with real decorative force and excellent wall presence.
