American Masonic Needlework Sampler — “Trust in God” Gertrude O’Conner, Harvey, Illinois, circa 1880s
1/7
$3,500.00 USD

A striking example of late-19th-century American fraternal needlework celebrating the symbolic traditions of Freemasonry. The composition centers on the bold motto “TRUST IN GOD,” surrounded by richly worked Masonic imagery including the radiant All-Seeing Eye, celestial and terrestrial globes, flanking lodge columns, and the distinctive checkerboard pavement representing the moral path of life. At the center appears the Square and Compasses, the principal emblem of Freemasonry, symbolizing virtue, moral conduct, and spiritual discipline.

The sampler was executed by Gertrude O’Conner of Harvey, Illinois, for her husband Benjamin D. O’Conner, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 832. The reverse retains a period typed label reading:

“Mr. Benjamin D. O’Conner, Masonic Lodge 832, made by Gertrude O’Conner, Harvey, Illinois. Approximately 90 years old, 1977. Given to Lyle B. Cameron.”

This inscription preserves an exceptional chain of provenance linking the work directly to its maker, its intended lodge member, and a later documented owner.

Beautifully executed with confident needlework and harmonious color, the piece remains housed in its original 19th-century frame and glass, preserving its historic presentation. Works such as this reflect the important role domestic needlework played in honoring fraternal ideals of faith, virtue, and brotherhood during the height of American Masonic culture in the late nineteenth century.

A rare and highly decorative example of American Masonic folk art with documented provenance.
