American toleware painted tin box, New England, circa 1835–1850
1/8
$675.00 USD

Rectangular hinged form with original clasp, retaining its original iron-oxide red paint with gilt border and foliate corner devices. The front decorated with a naïvely painted sheep in a pastoral landscape within an oval reserve. The interior and underside show untouched tin with period oxidation. A scarce and highly desirable figural example of early American painted tin.
