A wonderful hand-hammered copper ritual hand-washing vessel used for Netilat Yadayim, the traditional Jewish ceremonial washing of the hands. European, mid-19th century. Constructed from hand-worked copper with a dovetailed vertical seam, rolled rim, and distinctive opposing strap handles secured by hand-riveted tabs. The elegant waisted form and symmetrical double handles are characteristic of traditional natla vessels used in Jewish households throughout Eastern and Central Europe.
Retains a rich copper surface with scattered verdigris at seams and joins, evidence of age and use. Accompanied by an old handwritten family note found within the vessel referencing a family member’s journey to America, adding an appealing layer of provenance and immigrant history.
