Carved Turtle Walking Stick with Mushroom Mark American Folk Art, Mid-20th Century
1/7
$350.00 USD

Exceptional carved hardwood walking stick surmounted by a finely sculpted turtle resting atop a dramatically flared and faceted root-form handle. Executed with remarkable folk-art presence, the turtle displays deeply incised shell decoration, textured limbs, expressive carved eyes, and a beautifully aged warm surface with rich natural patina throughout. The broad sculptural top retains a powerful hand-hewn quality, transitioning into a long tapered shaft showing decades of honest handling wear and oxidation.

The shaft is further inscribed with the maker’s distinctive mushroom-form mark above the number “1511,” likely indicating workshop or production numbering. The overall form combines Adirondack and American woodland folk-art traditions with the tactile feel of a true working cane rather than a decorative tourist object. Particularly striking is the contrast between the darkened, faceted handle and the glowing amber-toned turtle carving, giving the piece exceptional visual depth and sculptural character.

A highly decorative and unusually strong example of American carved folk art walking-stick craftsmanship with outstanding surface, presence, and originality.

Condition: Excellent overall antique/vintage condition with expected age-related wear, surface abrasions, oxidation, and handling marks consistent with long use and display. Retains a beautiful untouched aged surface throughout.
