Collection of Four Handwoven Nantucket-Style Baskets

A charming and exceptionally well-crafted collection of four handwoven Nantucket-style baskets, acquired on Cape Cod and representing the work of a highly skilled regional artisan. While the identity of the actual basket maker remains unknown, the baskets display the hallmarks of traditional Nantucket basket construction, including finely handwoven cane bodies, turned hardwood rims and bases, hand-bent swing handles, and carefully fitted ivory-colored handle washers.

The group consists of an uncommon tall umbrella stand with its original fitted liner, a beautifully proportioned oval swing-handle gathering basket, a small companion basket, and a charming miniature swing-handle basket retaining its original scallop shell and dried floral decoration. An accompanying presentation card describes the use of locally collected Cape Cod scallop shells and salt-marsh grasses, reinforcing the collection’s strong Cape Cod heritage and coastal character.

The workmanship throughout is remarkably consistent, suggesting the baskets were acquired from a single artisan or studio over time. The uncommon forms, particularly the umbrella stand, elevate the collection beyond the ordinary and reflect the versatility and craftsmanship associated with traditional Nantucket basket weaving.
