Dayak Basket on Stand — Borneo, Mid-20th Century
1/8
$375.00 USD

23” tall x 12” diameter

Exceptional handwoven rattan and bamboo basket of tall tapering form, created by the Dayak peoples of Borneo, likely Kalimantan, Indonesia. Constructed over a reinforced cane framework with elevated footed base, the basket displays bold geometric decoration in contrasting dark and natural fibers, producing a striking graphic and architectural presence.

The finely executed weaving, dramatic zigzag and diamond motifs, and rich untouched honey-and-ebony patina give the piece tremendous sculptural and ethnographic appeal. Both tribal object and modernist form, this is an outstanding example of Southeast Asian basketry with exceptional display presence and sophisticated interior design appeal.

Condition: Minor scattered wear and small losses consistent with age and use. Structurally sound with beautiful untouched surface and patina throughout.
