A wonderfully soulful American folk art pond sailboat, retaining an exceptional untouched surface together with its remarkably evocative old cloth sail and primitive rigging. Hand-fashioned in wood with a long, narrow hull, the boat survives in a beautifully weathered palette of deep maritime blue, chalky white and red.

The original painted surface is outstanding—dry, crackled and naturally worn from age and use, with broad passages revealing the warm wood beneath. Red-painted mast and stern elements provide wonderful punctuation against the blue hull and white deck, giving the boat tremendous sculptural presence.

Especially appealing is the survival of the deeply aged cloth sail and early rigging, including primitive iron eyes, wire fittings, chain and hardware. The oatmeal-colored sail, heavily stained, frayed and softened by time, gives the vessel an almost ghostlike quality—as though just retrieved from an old boathouse after its final voyage across a village pond.

With its unusually narrow 30-inch hull, tall mast and wonderfully naïve construction, this is equally successful as an early sporting toy, maritime artifact or piece of abstract American folk sculpture. A particularly appealing survivor combining the three things one hopes to find in an early pond boat: great old paint, an original sail, and surviving period rigging.

Condition: Very good as-found folk condition with expected rubbing, paint loss, craquelure and surface wear. Old loss/separation at the extreme bow. Sail with substantial age toning, staining, fraying, small holes and edge losses. Rigging and hardware show expected oxidation, wear and scattered losses; some original rigging elements are no longer present.
