Finely modeled Austrian glazed terracotta figure depicting a Continental gentleman standing upon an emerald green mound base, holding a pipe in his right hand. The figure is rendered in rich polychrome high-gloss enamels, including a deep black jacket, cobalt trousers, striped yellow waistcoat, and vibrant red neckerchief. His expressive moustached face and relaxed posture reflect the romanticized rural genre subjects popular in the late Austro-Hungarian period.
Impressed to the underside with the intertwined E & R monogram for Ernst Wahliss and further stamped “Made in Austria,” dating the piece to the post-1891 export era. Wahliss was one of Vienna’s leading art pottery and porcelain firms, associated with the Turn-Teplitz region, producing finely executed figural works for the European and American decorative markets at the turn of the twentieth century.
Height: 14 inches.
A handsome and well-preserved example of late 19th-century Austrian art pottery, combining strong sculptural modeling with vivid enamel decoration typical of Wahliss production during the height of Viennese export craftsmanship.
