Superb Untouched, Hand-Worn Surface
American, Mid-19th Century, circa 1840–1870
11¼” H × 2½” diameter at base
A particularly handsome and sculptural example of nineteenth-century American treen, finely turned from an exceptionally choice piece of boldly figured tiger maple. Strong bands of curl ripple across the working end and continue upward along the slender shaft, shifting from warm honey and amber to rich caramel and deep brown.
Especially appealing is the remarkably fine, dry and seemingly untouched surface. Generations of handling have imparted a wonderfully silky hand-polish, with the elongated handle gradually deepening in color toward the beautifully darkened mushroom-form grip.
The form is unusually successful, combining a substantial cylindrical working end with a gently rounded shoulder, attenuated shaft and boldly flared terminal. This exaggerated silhouette gives the humble domestic implement remarkable sculptural presence.
Minor dents, checking and surface irregularities are consistent with age and honest use and only enhance its character.
A superb piece of American treen, elevated by extraordinary tiger-maple figure, rich natural color, beautiful proportions and generations of human touch.
