Expressive American Folk Art Soldier Figure, dated 1862
1/8
$675.00 USD

Hand-carved and painted wooden figure depicting a standing uniformed soldier, likely created as a post–Civil War commemorative object. The elongated figure displays a deeply expressive carved face with heavy-lidded eyes, pronounced nose, and downturned mouth, conveying a solemn and contemplative presence characteristic of 19th-century vernacular carving. The soldier is shown wearing a dark blue jacket with applied metal button details, light blue trousers, and a carved cap with original painted surface throughout.

The figure is carved in the round from solid wood with integral base and boots. The base is incised with the date “1862” along with additional carved letters, likely personal or memorial inscriptions. Retains excellent original paint with expected age wear, oxidation, and handling patina consistent with long-term display.

American, likely New England or Mid-Atlantic origin, circa 1870–1890.
