Wonderful and whimsical grouping of early American folk art including a double-sided hand-painted “GUESTS” sign accompanied by four hand-carved miniature bust figures — three gentlemen and one lady — all retaining warm untouched surfaces and remarkable handmade character.
The sign, measuring 17” x 7”, is painted on both sides in bold cream lettering over a richly aged brown stippled surface with original iron hanging loops still intact. Its dry original finish, naturally darkened patina, and honest wear give it the unmistakable feeling of an old country inn, boarding house, or roadside guest room sign from another time. The simple hand-painted lettering has terrific folk charm and strong graphic presence.
The miniature carvings are especially appealing, each carved by hand with expressive naïve features, exaggerated noses, and simple geometric forms. The lone lady bust with rounded hair stands among three gentleman figures, each possessing its own distinct personality and humorous expression. The carving marks remain visible throughout, giving the group an honest homemade quality as though they were slowly whittled during winter evenings at a rural farmhouse table. Their dry untouched surfaces, age shrinkage, and softly worn edges only enhance the folky character.
Together the group has the feel of a gathering outside a small-town boarding house or country tavern, filled with warmth, humor, and true Americana spirit. A delightful and highly decorative folk art grouping with outstanding shelf and wall presence.
