Large Scandinavian Folk Art Wooden Ale Tankard, Likely Norwegian, 18th/Early 19th Century
1/10
$325.00 USD

Large hand-turned and carved wooden ale tankard of impressive scale, retaining a deep reddish-brown original patina and dry untouched surface. The body is incised on opposing sides with a bold folk device resembling an owner’s mark or stylized monogram, accompanied by protective five-point star motifs. The shaped handle with pierced upper lug indicates the vessel originally had a hinged wooden lid, now absent. A powerful early treen object with great surface, scale, and folk presence. Vermont estate provenance.
Condition: Lid lacking; age cracks, old shrinkage separations, rim wear, surface scratches, oxidation, and expected use wear throughout. Stable and highly decorative.
Dimensions: 6 1/2 in. high; 7 in. diameter
