A superb and unusually large American pantry firkin by the celebrated South Hingham cooperage of C. Wilder & Son, one of the foremost manufacturers of 19th-century New England woodenware. Expertly constructed of finely tapered pine staves bound by original bentwood hoops and retaining its original fitted lid and graceful bentwood swing handle secured with turned wooden buttons. The lid bears the impressed maker's stamp, "C. Wilder & Son, SO. Hingham," identifying one of the most desirable Hingham makers whose products supplied homes throughout New England and beyond.

Distinguished by its impressive scale and exceptionally pleasing proportions, this firkin possesses an elegant, architectural form rarely found in larger examples. The untouched natural surface has mellowed over more than 150 years to a rich honey and chestnut brown patina, beautifully highlighting the fine grain of the pine and the craftsmanship of the cooper. The broad arched handle, crisp stave construction, and warm, unaltered surface combine to create a piece of remarkable visual presence.

Large stamped Hingham firkins retaining their original lid, swing handle, and untouched surface are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire, particularly in this generous size.
