Maine Coastal Folk Art Harbor Diorama American, Maine
1/8
$300.00 USD

circa 1940–1960
Painted wood, shells, wire and mixed media
Approximately 14 × 14 inches overall
A wonderfully detailed and exceptionally folky Maine coastal harbor diorama, creating an entire miniature working waterfront within its compact 14-inch frame. Constructed almost entirely by hand, the scene combines painting, model making and natural materials to wonderful effect, giving the piece remarkable depth and character.
Two wonderfully weathered fishing shacks flank a narrow harbor entrance, each painstakingly assembled from tiny individual pieces of wood. The buildings retain beautifully dry red and green painted surfaces and are topped by rows of individually cut and laid wooden shingles. They stand upon elaborate timber wharves complete with pilings, railings, ramps and wonderfully rendered cross-braced supports beneath the docks.
Two handmade open boats dominate the foreground. One rests upon a shoreline composed of actual seashells, while the second is dramatically propped against the opposite wharf, its rising bow directing the eye toward the open water. Between the docks, the harbor recedes into a boldly painted expanse of turquoise and blue-green water beneath a wonderfully brushed sky. Two tiny sailing vessels appear along the distant horizon, greatly extending the illusion of depth.
Perhaps the most charming detail is the whimsical little bird suspended above the harbor on a slender wire—a wonderfully eccentric touch that gives the entire scene unmistakable folk-art personality.
The maker’s inventive use of perspective, irregular handmade construction, richly weathered palette and combination of real shells with painted and three-dimensional elements transform this from a simple model into a complete miniature Maine waterfront world. Remarkably detailed for its modest scale and possessing tremendous maritime folk-art presence.
Provenance: Maine. Retaining a wonderfully aged surface with expected minor wear and irregularities consistent with age and handmade construction. A particularly charming example of mid-20th-century American coastal folk art.
