Measuring just 8 inches long, the spoon possesses an extraordinary amount of detail for its intimate scale. Rising from the deeply hollowed, softly irregular bowl is a long narrow stem completely embellished with dense cross-hatched chip carving, terminating in an architectural collar suggestive of a decorated cuff. From this emerges a beautifully naïve yet remarkably accomplished hand carved fully in the round.
The hand itself is exceptional. Individual fingers are modeled across the reverse of the book, complete with incised joints, while the thumb curls convincingly around its face. The book is unmistakably identified by the carefully incised words “HOLY BIBLE.” Even its exposed edge has been carved with a succession of parallel lines representing the individual leaves of the book—a charming detail that speaks to the extraordinary care invested in this small devotional object.
The spoon has a particularly appealing European vernacular character, combining the practical vocabulary of traditional treen with religious symbolism and highly personal folk sculpture. Its extensive chip-carved geometric decoration relates naturally to the long tradition of decorated wooden spoons and love tokens found throughout Britain and continental Europe, and particularly to the celebrated Welsh tradition of elaborately carved presentation and love spoons. Having descended from England, the piece is probably British and quite possibly Welsh.
Rather than an ordinary domestic utensil, the spoon was almost certainly intended as a symbolic presentation or devotional object. The hand grasping the Bible presents a wonderfully direct image of faith, devotion and steadfastness—the Word of God quite literally held firmly in one’s hand. Whether originally made as a religious presentation, marriage or courtship token cannot now be known, adding an appealing element of mystery to the piece.
