Remarkably Expressive Jamaican Folk Art Carving of a Stern-Faced Gentleman with Hands in His Pockets
1/5
$350.00 USD

Jamaica, West Indies | Circa 1920-1950

Hand-Carved Dense Tropical Hardwood, Possibly Lignum Vitae | Rich Original-Appearing Brown Surface | 15½" High

A wonderfully whimsical and expressive example of Jamaican folk art, this delightful hand-carved gentleman possesses tremendous personality, bold sculptural character, and an irresistible sense of humor. Fashioned from a single substantial piece of exceptionally hard, heavy tropical hardwood, possibly lignum vitae, the figure demonstrates the remarkable skill and imagination of its unknown Jamaican maker.

Most captivating is his dramatically oversized head, with an enormous projecting nose, deeply carved eyes, furrowed brow, tightly pursed lips, and elongated chin, creating an unforgettable expression of almost comical seriousness. His wonderfully self-assured stance, dressed in a formal three-piece suit with both hands casually tucked into his trouser pockets, adds tremendous charm and individuality.

Particularly impressive is the carver's ability to achieve such expressive detail in exceptionally dense hardwood.

The exaggerated proportions, boldly modeled features, and charmingly naive treatment of his clothing give the sculpture outstanding folk art appeal.

Carved entirely from one continuous piece of wood, including its rectangular base, the figure retains a beautifully aged, warm brown surface with darker recessed areas and subtle wear. The underside is boldly hand-incised "JAMAICA."

A wonderfully engaging example of Caribbean folk sculpture, combining remarkable craftsmanship, delightful humor, and extraordinary personality. A stern little gentleman with an unmistakably commanding presence.
