Carved from a single block of softwood with a separately carved and pegged hat fashioned from a naturally weathered section of wood, the sculpture possesses a quiet, contemplative expression enhanced by elongated proportions, a prominent angular nose, incised mouth, and remnants of the original painted eyes. The relaxed hand resting across the chest, simplified anatomy, and confident, economical carving reflect the work of a talented regional artist with a distinctive personal style.
The underside is boldly signed “Les Winningham” and inscribed “Moclips, Wa.”, linking the carving to the historic Pacific coastal community of Moclips, Washington. The integral base is further painted “TOURIST,” identifying the subject and adding to the sculpture’s charming period character.
