Newey & Bloomer Ltd., Birmingham, England, circa 1935–1945
A striking and highly sculptural example of prewar English Art Deco industrial design, this exceptional “Simplex Patent” whistling kettle was handcrafted by the celebrated Birmingham firm of Newey & Bloomer Ltd. Executed in heavy-gauge hand-spun solid copper with sweeping solid brass handle supports and an ebonized turned wood grip and finial, the kettle embodies the refined machine-age elegance of the Streamline Moderne movement.
Its dramatic architectural silhouette — featuring a broad cylindrical base, compressed domed shoulder, stepped concentric lid, and sharply tapering aerodynamic spout — reflects the sophisticated geometry and metallic glamour associated with 1930s Deco design. The contrast of glowing copper, warm brass, and glossy black wood creates a quintessential period palette evocative of luxury ocean liners, cocktail shakers, and high-style modernist interiors of the era.
Marked to base “THE SIMPLEX PATENT KETTLE / MADE IN ENGLAND / GUARANTEED SOLID COPPER” with patent numbers 400709–402190 and registration no. 786743, additionally stamped “PAT No. 423201” to the spout, corresponding to the firm’s important 1934 British patent for its advanced whistle and heat-resistant handle system.
An exceptionally preserved example retaining crisp stampings, original fittings, rich copper surface, and outstanding decorative presence. Far more than utilitarian kitchenware, this kettle stands as a superb object of British Deco metalwork and machine-age decorative arts.
