A wonderfully expressive American folk art eagle-form Bible or book stand, hand carved from softwood, probably pine, and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.

The carving on this piece is absolutely amazing. With wings dramatically spread, the eagle displays individually articulated feathers, deeply gouged breast plumage, finely worked legs and extraordinary oversized talons with rounded, knuckled toes and pointed claws. Slight irregularities and asymmetry give the carving tremendous movement and unmistakable hand-carved character.

Best of all is the wonderfully folky face. A large rounded head, tiny button-like eyes and boldly projecting beak create an unforgettable wide-eyed, almost innocent expression—a naïve interpretation that gives the eagle tremendous personality.

The reverse reveals its practical function, with the broad wings forming a support for an open Bible or book and a projecting lower ledge holding the volume in place.

The warm brown surface shows appealing age and use, with darker coloration in the carved recesses, scattered small holes, minor losses and expected wear.

An unusually charismatic piece of American vernacular carving, equally successful as a functional Bible stand and freestanding folk sculpture. The exaggerated feet, beautifully worked plumage and extraordinary wide-eyed face give this eagle remarkable presence and personality.
