American Folk Art Carved Wooden Bird, Inscribed “Grouse” Late 19th–Early 20th Century
1/7
$225.00 USD

A finely hand-carved American folk art bird sculpture, depicting a woodland grouse, carved in the round and mounted on its original integral pedestal base. The bird displays a compact, rounded body with subtly modeled head, short beak, and squared tail, the simplified yet confident form conveying the sturdy presence of the native upland game bird.

The surface retains a mellow, undisturbed patina with visible hand-tool marks throughout. Traces of early pigment remain, including a soft yellow-ochre patch along the flank, suggesting the carving was once lightly decorated rather than left entirely natural. The current surface shows honest oxidation and handling wear consistent with age, adding depth and warmth to the form.

The underside bears a faint but legible pencil inscription reading “grouse,” likely original and written in period graphite, identifying the species in the straightforward manner typical of rural folk carvings. The inscription further reinforces the handmade, personal nature of the piece.

The bird and base were conceived and carved together from solid wood, with no evidence of later alteration. The sculptural base, hand-shaped and asymmetrical, complements the bird’s stance and enhances its presence as a mantel or shelf object.

An appealing and authentic example of late 19th–early 20th century American folk sculpture, combining confident carving, traces of original color, and original pencil identification.
