American Hand-Blown “Pond’s Extract” Apothecary Bottle

A wonderful and exceptionally early American hand-blown aqua glass Pond’s Extract apothecary bottle, boldly embossed “POND’S EXTRACT” vertically on the front and retaining its original embossed “1846” base mark. Produced during the earliest years of Theron T. Pond’s revolutionary witch-hazel preparation, this bottle represents the infancy of what would become one of America’s most recognized medicinal and cosmetic brands.

Hand-blown in a mold with a finely tooled applied collar, the bottle displays the appealing irregularities associated with mid-19th-century American glassmaking, including subtle mold lines, gentle waviness to the glass, and a rich pale aqua color. Particularly desirable is the original cork, still firmly seated and undisturbed, along with visible remnants of the bottle’s original contents. The interior retains authentic oxidized botanical residue and sediment from the original witch-hazel extract, offering tangible evidence of its untouched history. Unlike examples that have been aggressively cleaned, this bottle survives in an honest, remarkably original state that collectors and museums greatly appreciate.

The embossed 1846 base commemorates the founding year of Pond’s Extract and firmly places this bottle among the earliest generations produced for the company. Few survive today retaining their original closure and interior contents.
