Exceptional hand-crafted wall cabinet or hanging storage box featuring a beautifully executed woodland deer motif rendered in layered cutwork. The front is centered by a reclining stag beneath an arched frame and surrounded by stylized grasses, flanked by pierced geometric ornaments, and crowned by a deeply carved scalloped border. The shaped backboard retains its original carved “1931” date beneath a decorative heart-and-foliage crest and incorporates a period mirror insert, adding both visual interest and utility.
Constructed of oak and oak-stained woods with a warm, mellow surface acquired through nearly a century of age. The cabinet opens to reveal a useful storage compartment and retains its original hinges and hanging ring. The overall design reflects the influence of Scandinavian, Germanic, and Black Forest decorative traditions translated through the hands of a talented rural craftsman.
The combination of the dated inscription, woodland imagery, architectural silhouette, and untouched surface gives this piece tremendous folk art appeal and makes it equally suitable for a collection of Americana, lodge décor, or country antiques.
