A wonderful assembled grouping of American painted toleware pantry wares, likely Pennsylvania, circa 1840–1865, displaying a strong Pennsylvania German (Penn Dutch) folk art influence throughout. The collection includes a six-piece spice set with its original handled tray, a painted tea caddy, and a diminutive covered tea or syrup pot, all decorated on rich black japanned grounds with hand-painted tulips, songbirds, flowering vines, and bold fruit motifs in vibrant shades of red, ochre, green, and cream. The naïve brushwork, whimsical bird decoration, and stylized floral motifs closely reflect the decorative vocabulary associated with Pennsylvania German folk art of the period.

The complete spice set is particularly desirable, retaining all six covered canisters, including one original pierced shaker lid, housed in its original carrying tray. Together, the pieces create an exceptional early American pantry display, possessing tremendous visual impact and outstanding folk art appeal.
