Hand-Painted American Firkin, c. 1880–1900
1/14
$1,100.00 USD

Large bentwood firkin of classic coopered form, retaining its superb original polychrome decoration and surface. The lid is centered with a boldly executed eight-point compass star in deep red, olive green, and ochre, framed within a scrolling vine border. The body is ornamented with rhythmic tulip and foliate garlands and a finely rendered fruit basket panel featuring grapes, pears, peaches, and cherries, painted with confident brushwork and subtle tonal variation.

Entirely hand-painted, not stenciled, with visible freehand brush strokes, natural pigment oxidation, and uniform age craquelure throughout. The surface retains its original period varnish with warm, mellowed sheen. No evidence of later overpainting or restoration. Interior preserves its original aqua-green paint wash. Pegged swing handle intact; coopered staves tight with only minor age-related shrinkage consistent with 19th-century construction.

Height 16 inches to top of handle; base diameter 11 inches.
