A wonderfully folky, entirely handmade Maine coastal diorama depicting a weathered fishing shack overlooking the rocky shoreline and sea. Constructed from painted wood, actual seashells and mixed media, with a handmade boat and oars, tiny red-and-white fishing floats, and a wonderfully primitive shack built board by board.
The shell-covered shoreline transitions into a boldly painted seascape with choppy blue water, green offshore island and expressive sky. The exaggerated scale, unconventional perspective and wonderfully dry, weathered surface give the piece tremendous three-dimensional folk-art presence.
From the same Maine collection—and attributed to the same unidentified hand—as a closely related coastal harbor diorama sharing the distinctive boats, structures, painted backgrounds and shell-covered shoreline.
Maine provenance. Circa 1940–1960.
