Manuel Prieto — Hand-Forged Sheep-Shearing Shears
1/8
$175.00 USD

Spain, circa 1800–1840
A striking and unusually sculptural pair of early 19th-century Spanish hand-forged iron sheep-shearing shears, boldly struck with the maker’s name “MANUEL PRIETO” and bearing an additional “V. LASERENA” / “LASERNA” mark near the finger bows.
Entirely forged in the traditional manner, the shears feature exceptionally broad, elongated blades tapering to dramatic points, joined by a substantial hand-peened iron pivot. Particularly appealing are the large, irregular oval finger bows, individually drawn and shaped by the smith and retaining the subtle asymmetry and tool marks characteristic of early hand workmanship.
The surface is exceptional: a wonderfully dry, untouched combination of deep brown and black oxidation with scattered areas of old pitting and wear acquired through generations of agricultural use. The powerful open form—long opposing blades balanced against the wonderfully primitive looping handles—gives the piece a distinctly folk-art and sculptural quality, transcending its original function as a working farm implement.
Research has located other antique Spanish sheep shears bearing the Manuel Prieto mark, including an example recorded with the associated Laserena designation, supporting the attribution to this historic Spanish maker or workshop.
An evocative survivor of the rural Spanish wool trade and an especially handsome example of early blacksmith-made utilitarian ironwork.
