Miniature Slat-Back Rocking Chair
1/9
$275.00 USD

New England, late 19th–early 20th century

Rare hand-crafted miniature slat-back rocking chair constructed of solid hardwood, retaining its original dry, oxidized surface. The chair features a ladder-back with shaped horizontal slats, a slatted seat, and gracefully curved rockers, all assembled with early nails and pegged joinery. Original wire-rope side stabilizers secure the seat in the manner of early porch and reclining rockers.

The proportions and construction indicate this piece was made either as a child’s rocker or as a scaled salesman’s sample demonstrating a full-size slat-back porch chair form. The surface exhibits rich patina, wear consistent with age, and no evidence of later refinishing or repair. A compelling example of New England vernacular furniture and folk craftsmanship from the turn of the century.
