Monumental American Folk Art Carved and Painted Uncle Sam Figure
1/9
$950.00 USD

Late 19th century, circa 1875-1900
Large and visually commanding hand-carved pine figure depicting Uncle Sam, executed in full round and retaining a strong, naturally aged original painted surface. The figure is boldly proportioned with articulated arms and legs and presents powerful sculptural presence characteristic of late 19th-century American folk carving.
Uncle Sam is shown wearing his iconic tall patriotic hat with red and white striping and blue star-decorated band, a blue coat adorned with white stars, and boldly striped trousers. The expressive folk-carved facial features include a pronounced beard, incised hair treatment, and hand-painted eyes, displaying confident naïve character and early hand tool workmanship throughout. Carved from lightweight pine with visible hand tool marks and traditional articulated construction. Large-scale patriotic folk carvings of this type are scarce, particularly examples retaining strong original surface and expressive character. The figure likely served as a store display, promotional figure, or celebratory Americana object during the post-Civil War patriotic period.
Accompanied by a later custom-made seated display stand, removable and separate from the original carving.
