Set of Three Chinese Export Silver Miniatures by Cum Wo (錦和) Canton / Hong Kong, circa 1890–1930
1/15
$450.00 USD

An exceptional and highly decorative suite of three finely executed Chinese export silver miniatures by the celebrated Canton silversmith Cum Wo (錦和), each depicting charming scenes of traditional Chinese daily life rendered in remarkable detail. The group includes a rickshaw with driver beneath a scalloped canopy, a shoulder-pole street vendor carrying provisions, and an elaborate ox cart with passengers and original textile-lined interior.
Each miniature bears the hallmark of Cum Wo, one of the premier Chinese export silver workshops active in Canton and Hong Kong during the late Qing and early Republican periods, together with “90” purity marks indicating high-grade .900 silver. Cum Wo is regarded alongside Wang Hing among the most important and collectible makers of Chinese export silver produced for the Western market.
The craftsmanship throughout is extraordinary, from the delicately formed oxen, expressive figures, and spoked wheels to the engraved flooring, architectural canopy supports, and miniature market goods. These whimsical “street life” scenes were created as luxury souvenirs for Western travelers and collectors fascinated by the culture and imagery of late 19th and early 20th century China.
Particularly desirable as a matching, hallmarked group, the set retains a beautiful untouched surface and rich natural patina developed over generations. The ox cart notably retains its original red textile seat lining, an uncommon survival adding further authenticity and visual appeal.
An outstanding and museum-worthy collection of Chinese export silver miniatures with exceptional presentation, rarity, and collector appeal.
Condition: Excellent overall antique condition with minor wear and tarnish consistent with age and use.
